GoTo has become a powerhouse in the
search engines. Formerly garnering traffic only through its own
portal, GoTo has aggressively sought and gained partnerships with a
majority of the high traffic portals on the web. A good listing in
GoTo gives you exposure at a majority of the most important search
engines. The following list is a partial list, as GoTo is constantly
making new deals with influential partners.
GoTo listings are used by the
following in the indicated manner:
AOL
– Web Search and Web site search displays the top three listings
from GoTo
Netscape
Search – displays the top two listings on each results page. GoTo
is also in the search rotation. As a matter of fact, 6 of the
search options on the Netscape search page use GoTo data in some way.
HotBot
– the top three listings are displayed at the top of the page, and
the fourth listing is displayed between the 9th and 10th
result – (which are delivered by Direct Hit)
Lycos
– the top 3 listings from GoTo are displayed, and the 4th
and 5th results are displayed mixed in with the other
results.
Altavista
– AltaVista
displays the top 3 results at the foot of the search results. A good
position, because users generally scroll to the bottom of the results
page. The GoTo listings are before the links to subsequent pages,
where they cannot be missed. There is also an option to click "more" to
show a full page of GoTo results.
Metacrawler
– the top ten GoTo listings are displayed mixed in to the search
results pages. In addition, the top five listings in GoTo are in a
"GoTo's Best Picks" box at the bottom of each results page.
Surfers reaching the bottom of the page are shown the entire box,
above the next pages links.
Dogpile
– the top 10 GoTo listings are displayed in the GoTo section, near
the top of the results, second only to Looksmart.
Mamma.com
– lists the top listing in GoTo under the heading of "Mamma
Recommends", and up to 10 listings mixed into the search results.
Earthlink / Mindspring – the default
start page for users to this mega ISP uses GoTo for its search
provider
GoTo is working on an arrangement with
Microsoft to link the Web Search button on the new Internet Explorer
directly to GoTo results. As many new users think this button is the
only button to search the Internet, this would be a major coup for
GoTo and a boost to traffic for GoTo’s advertisers. Soon a
partnership may be announced with Microsoft’s Bcentral
GoTo supplies results to dozens of other
significant engines, and tens of thousands of affiliates, yielding a
very deep penetration in many markets.
As you can clearly see, an effective
pay-per-click campaign will get you an enormous amount of exposure,
and you only pay for results.
